The winter holidays of 2009 we spent in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The highlight of the whole trip was most certainly whale watching excursion in the Bay of Banderas. We were on a small inflatable speed boat and were able to quickly move between sites where the whales were spotted.

From mid-December through the end of March the Bay of Banderas serves as a breeding and calving ground for the north Pacific population of humpback whales (http://www.acsonline.org/factpack/humpback.htm ). Warm weather and calm waters make it on the best places on Earth to observe behavior of these magnificent creatures.

While photographing the fast moving whales from a bouncing light boat with a long telephoto lens presented some challenges (less than half of the photos taken were in focus) I managed to capture some images that I'm not ashamed to share here.
